Lev Kuleshov was an early Soviet director, possibly one of the first film theorists of montage, who worked prior to Eisenstein’s appearance in film. Nevertheless, Hitch didn’t learn those lessons overnight. Less well known among film students, however, are Kuleshov’s actual films. Concerning emotional resonance in cinema the Kuleshov Effect is an important concept. Like modern poets who learned their craft writing sonnets, the discipline was good for directors who carried those techniques into the sound era. Last week in my film studies class, I showed portions of The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing, including a brief overview of montage theory and a recreation of the so-called Kuleshov Effect. Throughout his life he created 18 films and helped establish the worlds first film school in Moscow. To show this example, he created what has Alongside his theoretical work, Lev Kuleshov was an active director of feature-length films until 1943. It rests on the theory of montage and the effect that film editing has on evoking emotions from a viewer. Kuleshov believed that the essence of the cinema was editing, the juxtaposition of one shot with another. He was born in 1899 and died aged 71 in 1970. MEDIUM: Short experimental film. Since 1943, Kuleshov was serving as In 1923, Sergei Eisenstein began his career in film theory, by writing ‘The Montage of Attractions for LEF (Left Front of the Arts) Journal. Every student of film is no doubt familiar with the name Lev Kuleshov and his famous Kuleshov effect.
